Dry brushing, also known as exfoliating, is a great way to stimulate the skin, remove dry skin and stimulate circulation. In this post, we will discuss some benefits that come with dry brushing and the proper way to do it.
Please note, if you have sensitive skin or a condition called psoriasis, we recommend consulting your health care provider before adding dry brushing to your routine.
Let's start with some benefits!
Simulation of the lymphatic system
The motion and sensation on the skin caused by dry brushing promote better function of the lymphatic system and helps lymph flow and drainage.
Soft and clear skin (includes KP)
Gently brushing and exfoliating the skin will clear up the pores from excess Kreatin, dry skin, and any other cause that could block the pores if you are suffering from Keratosis Pilaris (KP), dry brushing and moisturizing are great for you. We have made an entire blog post on this topic.
Reduces the appearance of stretch marks
The brushing helps the skin produce more collagen and helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
Lessen the appearance of cellulite
Regular dry brushing helps to soften fat deposits underneath the skin and help to distribute them more evenly. It also encourages circulation so that the body can easier get rid of excess fat - keep in mind to exercise and follow a good nutrition plan.
Removes toxins
As mentioned above, dry brushing stimulates the lymphatic system and drainage. Therefore it is excellent for the removal of toxins.
Also, it clears up blocked pores, which is essential for removing toxins. The toxins will then exit the body through sweat.
Stress relieving
The muscles will automatically relax during dry brushing, and if there is tension in the muscles, it will be relieved, and the pain should lessen.
Always ensure to be gentle to the skin!
Improves sleep quality
The best time to dry brush is in the morning, but there can be some benefits in doing it later too. Make sure you do not brush just before sleeping and take a warm shower afterward for complete relaxation.
As mentioned circulation is improved, the lymphatic system activated, and pores are unclogged.
This can promote better detoxification at night, and relaxation can promote better sleep too.
There is quite a variety of different brushes, and this is for a good reason. We all have different types of skin and react differently to stimulation. Generally, I would recommend using a soft to medium brush and avoid a horsehair brush as you do not want to overstimulate or exfoliate your skin.
Depending on why you are dry brushing, you can brush every day or twice a week. Keep in mind to be gentle on your skin and listen to your body as your body will show you what is needed.

When dry brushing, ensure your skin is not wet or moist. You want to start on your right side. Go, for example, from your little finger up to your shoulder and down towards your thumb on the inside of your arm. The same rule applies to the rest of the body. When brushing the head, you should start at the forehead and move down towards the back.
Circulating motions are also beneficial.
Ensure to apply a little pressure but not too much so as to not irritate the skin.
The best time to dry brush is before taking a shower, as you can wash away dry and flaky skin with lukewarm water and we recommend moisturising the skin with a great moisturiser. We have a recipe we like to share with you; to read it, click here!
