I have PCOS - what can I do?



Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a widespread condition in women. One in ten women is diagnosed with PCOS.


The most common symptoms of PCOS are:


  • Irregular periods or no periods at all.

  • Difficulty getting pregnant as a result of irregular ovulation or failure to ovulate.

  • Excessive hair growth (hirsutism) usually grows on the face, chest, back or buttocks.

  • Weight gain.

  • Thinning hair and hair loss from the head.

  • Oily skin or acne.


Please do not self diagnose and speak to your health care provider if you think you have PCOS.


There are four different causes which are:


  1. Insulin resistance

  2. Inflammation

  3. Pill/ hormonal contraception

  4. Hidden causes



Although other factors like inflammation or insulin resistance can play a role in PCOS, the leading cause is lead back to a hormonal imbalance. We have a seminar addressing this topic called "Understanding my body" feel free to check it out.


There is no cure for polycystic ovarian syndrome at this time.

But there is some good news, and it just takes three steps.


The first step is to determine what kind of PCOS you have. Here are the different types:


Type 1: insulin-resistant PCOS


If you have high levels of insulin, it can cause PCOS. Often, women suffering from pre-diabetes or diabetes are suffering from PCOS, but it is not always the case.


Type 2: inflammation caused PCOS


If you are suffering from chronic inflammation, your ovaries can be overstimulated by the inflammation and make too much testosterone, a contributing factor for every PCOS type.


Type 3: Pill/ Hormonal contraception caused


Doctors recommend hormonal contraception, especially the pill, to women that suffer from PCOS as it can lessen the symptoms. If you are taking hormonal contraception for precisely this reason, this type does not relate to your condition since the cause is not the pill.


After stopping the hormonal contraception, a woman's hormones have to readjust. The body needs to produce progesterone and estrogen again, adjusting to find the right balance. This can cause temporary PCOS, but don't worry; it will pass. In the next section, we will mention some tips you can do to help with the rebalancing process.


Type 4: hidden causes for PCOS


There can be other causes that we might be less able to control.

Women who suffer from PCOS are often struggling on many different levels, and it can be very emotional at times.


One reason is that PCOS might run in the family and, therefore, in your genes. Genetic PCOS, also called adrenal PCOS and accounts for about 10 per cent of PCOS diagnoses.

Because a condition is genetic, it does not mean all hope is lost, and much can be done to counterbalance this with lifestyle choices.

Other causes can be Thyroid disease, Vitamin D deficiency, Elevated prolactin or an Inflammatory diet.


This brings us to step two, which is elimination!

The elimination process might be the most challenging part, but without eliminating the cause, you will not fully overcome your PCOS.


Not doing the elimination is like having a leaky pipe and starting the mop-up before fixing the pipe - you need to go to the cause and eliminate the issue before addressing the symptom.


It is crucial to replace any possible cause with something that can help give your body the right environment to heal itself.

The body machinery is a wonderful piece of engineering, and it is up to us to manage it correctly.

Where to start?


Generality and new start program for all PCOS types.


Have a light but nutritious diet. We recommend a plant-based high fibre/ protein diet to reduce inflammation and boost your immune system.


It can be a short but intense workout, your regular workout, e.g. cardio, weight training, HIIT, Pilates etc.

What is most important is to ensure daily activities, even if it means walking around the block. Start with something easy and increase the challenge as you go.


W - Water

Staying hydrated is essential for our body to function at its best. Make sure to drink pure and clean water and avoid other beverages as many of those can have a dehydrating effect and therefore hamper you in your journey to overcoming your PCOS. Also, ensure to drink at least 2 litres and, if possible, your amount, which is your body weight in kg x 50 ml for adults.


S - Sunshine

Vitamin D is essential in our wellbeing and also in overcoming PCOS. The best source of Vitamin D is found in sunshine. Please be responsible and avoid untimely and overexposure to the sun.


T - Temperance

It would help to keep a balance in all you do. Overdoing anything good can become harmful.


A - Air

Fresh and clean air promotes good health.

Spending time in nature can help your body rejuvenate better and faster.


R - Rest

It has been shown that women who sleep 7-8 hours at night managed and overcame their PCOS better.

Being well-rested also helped reduce stress levels which are of utmost importance if you like to overcome your PCOS.


T - Trust

Trust is a big word for many.

Many illnesses could be avoided if we would worry less!

It has also be shown that women who believe in a higher power, God Almighty for some, are healthier and recover faster.


Take supplements.

Depending on your type, you will need different supplements. But what you can take of any kind is the Anna's Wild Yam Cream. Apply it twice a day and rotate where you apply it.
